Introducing ThresholdTM VIP

Threshold is “The Next Step” in the advancement of vacuum insulation.

Threshold VIPs can be manufactured in thicknesses from 0.2 to 2.0 inches (5 mm to 51 mm) and from very small panels to very large panels (39 inches wide by 50 inches long or 1 meter wide by 1.27 meters long). This allows customers to design for the exact thermal resistance that they need.  It is the result of over 20 years of experience in developing high performance insulations.  You will find you are at the Threshold of a whole new opportunity for thermal product design.

Cold Chain Shipping

Cold Chain Shipping

Whether by parcel or pallet, thermally controlled shipping is essential in today’s cold chain logistics market. Manufacturers and producers must ensure their payloads are kept at the temperatures required for successful deployment of their products to end users. The need for cold chain parcels and pallets is ever increasing in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, chemical reagents, and other markets segments. In order to satisfy the needs of the markets, vacuum insulation panels (VIP) with high thermal insulation values are being used more and more in these segments.

With this in mind, Kingspan Insulation has one of the most efficient and effective VIPs in the thermal resistance insulation market, the Threshold VIP. Having a high R-value in such a thin profile allows cold chain shippers to choose between increasing payloads within their current shipping footprints or reducing their shipping footprint.

And with those options is also the ability to reduce the amount of phase change materials (PCM) used to keep the payload at the required temperatures. Longer delivery durations are also achieved by using the Threshold VIP in these applications.

Threshold VIPs are used in shipping containers for medical, food & beverage, chemical reagents, and others. Threshold VIPs can be used wherever longer delivery, less dry ice/phase change material, or reduced external dimensions are desired.

Refrigerators/Freezers

Refrigerators/Freezers

Laboratory freezers and refrigerators in the science and pharmaceuticals industry have always had a need for high thermal efficiency. Reduction of power consumption to keep stored items at their required temperatures is an increasing aspect for many manufacturers. Manufacturers have turned to Kingspan Insulation for our Threshold VIP product to enhance their refrigeration products’ ability to run at low temperatures while lowering their power consumption while also maximizing interior volume in the same footprint. Reduced power consumption and unit cycling increases the useful life and reliability of these systems.

Refrigerators and freezers for food and beverage and also walk-in coolers and freezers can also benefit immensely by use of the Threshold VIP in walls and doors. Threshold can be laminated to metal, FRP, or other materials to form a stress-skin panel that acts as the structural wall in these applications.

Transportation

Transportation

Refrigerated trucks, shipping container, and railcars from long-haul to last mile applications are prime applications for the Threshold VIPs. Almost all refrigerated or frozen food items must be transported to market by trucks or railcars. As much fuel can be used to refrigerate a railcar as to transport it from coast to coast. Threshold VIPs can be used to save energy and insulate the areas where very little room is available for insulation. Having a insulation value at a reduced thickness of insulation can allow for significant increases in payload when transporting goods while also reducing the fuel costs associated with keeping the payloads at their required temperatures.

Other Applications

Other Applications

The applications in which Threshold VIPs can be used is almost limitless. Automotive, marine, RVs, cryogenic, electronics, military, consumer goods, and even space are all areas where our Threshold VIPs have been used. As with other applications, one advantage is increasing interior volume within the same footprint while also increasing thermal insulation values. Marine and RV applications can benefit from smaller onboard refrigeration systems leading to more room in the interior living spaces and enhanced fuel efficiencies. Electronics systems can run cooler and thus faster for better processing speeds and lower power consumption. Military and space applications can benefit from better thermal systems management which enhance mission critical functions from life support to medical supply transport. Consumer goods including coolers and ice chests can keep food and beverages cold for incredibly long durations that are significantly longer than even the current leading brands are known for.

Excellent thermal design is crucial to obtaining all the benefit from very high performance vacuum insulation. Kingspan Insulation works with our customers to help design systems that are optimized for the parameters that are most important to them. We have developed our knowledge and design tools that allow us to rapidly reach outstanding product performance.
